Kiwanis members, family members and Circle K students from the University of Toledo arrived at the Meijer's store in Maumee to shop and pick up items to begin our annual Thanksgiving basket service project. This year's recipients were 29 very hard working and deserving families served by Mom's House. Mom's House is an organization that guides at-risk single parents through the process of achieving educational goals and provide tools and resources needed to become effective parents.
With intervention and support, the organization helps parents to set and attain lifetime educational goals, and break the cycle of poverty for the children.
From the Meijer's store we traveled to the home of Past President Brian Miller and Paul Swartz to begin assembling the baskets and boxes. The boxes were absolutely overflowing with canned goods, potatoes, butter, pie, rolls, gravy, stuffing and personal items. The food boxes also included a frozen 12-14 pound turkey for each family. After the delivery to Mom's house, our members were able to sit down and enjoy delicious soups prepared by Paul Swartz and Jennifer Payette and so many pies it is hard to believe. A wonderful time was had by all. What a great way to start out our holiday season. Thank you to the Maumee Meijer store for the large cash donation toward this project and for the discounts at the cash register. Special thanks to all the Kiwanis members for their cash donations, dedication and hard work. Special shout out to our new Community Services Committee Chairperson Gail Sanderson.
